Planning the Perfect Backyard Barbeque

Hosting the ultimate backyard barbecue is all about ensuring you do the proper planning. The preparation time that you put in prior to your event is key to avoiding any barbecue pitfalls, and it makes your duties that much easier on the day of the party. Avoid unnecessary stress, and ensure your backyard barbecue goes off without a hitch with some simple and essential planning tips.
Your grill is the centerpiece of your backyard barbecue. Make sure you have a high-quality grill brush to clean your grill thoroughly prior to your party. A clean grill makes for an easy day of cooking with less hassle.

Another key planning step is getting an accurate guest list together so you can ensure you have the necessary amount of food for the barbecue. A shortage of food can lead to a disastrous barbecue, while an excess of food can be an unnecessary hassle to clean up and store. Check more here.

BBQ Essentials

Preparation is key when getting ready to BBQ. Here are some tips from Hopcott Meats to keep in mind:

  • SET THE ENVIRONMENT: Gas is great but a charcoal BBQ brings adds that extra smoky flavour. A lid is essential too, to lock in flavour and moisture. Or, buy a contained griddle or a grill basket and add the chips you want. Layer your smoke with flavour.
  • ONLY USE HOME-MADE PATTIES: Hopcott has a great selection of patties or you can ask one of their butchers to give you some prime ground beef, turkey, pork, or chicken to make your own.
  • MARINADE, MARINADE, MARINADE: We all know the phrase ‘leave for a few hours, ideally overnight’. This rule, heavily, applies to barbecues, to make sure the flavours aren’t overridden by the addition of the smoke. In fact, it’s best to save some marinade to brush your meat or fish every 10 minutes or so as it cooks. You will add moisture, trap the flavour, and caramelize gently.
  • CRISP THE VEGGIES: Go for that charring along the bars – it looks amazing and tastes even better. Slice the veggies closer to the thin side, then grill away with light olive oil and the seasoning of your choice. Read more here.

One of my favorite things to execute is a “multi-grill” meal. While especially true when I’m entertaining, as I once commented having a multi-grill meal is like conducting a symphony. I’ve got something on this grill, that grill, and that grill, and it needs to all come together at the same time. It’s a little bit of pressure and a whole lot of fun. I love it and here are my tips to make it work.

Write it down!

This may go without saying, but I find it pays to write things down. Yes, somewhere, I can hear my Mom clapping.

I like to plan my food menu backward. I’ll start with the proposed “serve” time and list not only my finished food times, but my grill start times, in reverse order. The key to successfully grilling a large meal is having different types of food done at the same time. Without a written plan, I find this to be a daunting task.

Plenty of fuel!

I’m embarrassed to admit how many times I’ve called my Dad and asked him to bring Mom AND charcoal. I always have a ready supply on hand, but if I’m not checking, it’s the first thing to accidentally slip by. If you are planning a big weekend event, stock up on your coals and if running off of liquid propane, fill up those cylinders. See full article here.
