HEALTHY BBQ SAUCE

BBQ week doesn’t start until next next week (you will pretty much only see BBQ recipes from me next week), but I am getting started a little early to bring you this just in time for the weekend. I know it is tempting to just buy a bottle of BBQ sauce, but this is super easy to make and think how impressed your guests will be this weekend when you tell them that the delicious sauce they are tucking in to is homemade!

Growing up, an old friend’s Dad made the best BBQ sauce and he kept his recipe close to his chest and said he would never share. It was chunky, had the perfect blend of flavours and I have never been able to make anything like it. I have made a lot of good BBQ sauces in the past, but that was when I didn’t care what I was putting in to it and I added tons (not literally, I hope) of sugar to try and recreate that BBQ sauce I used to love so much.

Of course BBQ sauce with loads of sugar tastes great, but for those of us that don’t want to consume that much sugar, we need a healthier alternative that doesn’t lack in taste and I have made one that I am really happy with. I know there will be someone out there ready to comment with “buy maple syrup is still sugar” – yes, it is, but it has lots of nutritional benefits too and I have used much less than the sugar equivalent in store bought, which is what makes it healthier. See more here.

This simple homemade bbq sauce recipe can also be canned for long term storage and this sauce recipe can turn plain chicken, pork or ribs into a delicious, finger-licking meal.

Since we’re barbecue-agnostic in these parts, we felt free to couple our sauce-laden chicken with asparagus and a radicchio/napa slaw for dinner and I encourage you to also innovate as you please. I suspect Whole Foods boneless, skinless chicken thighs broiled in the oven weren’t getting us invited to any Memphis pig-pickins, anyhow.

This is a tangy, subtly spicy, delicious mutt of a barbecue sauce. On her show, Ina Garten explained that she had at one point tried to develop different sauces to complement different cuisines — from Asian to various South Eastern regions — but only when she mixed them all together in frustration did she find exactly her barbecue sauce nirvana. I couldn’t agree more. I make this all summer, freeze leftovers in one-cup servings, and sob when we run out.

SWEET AND SMOKY HOMEMADE BBQ SAUCE

This Sweet and Smoky BBQ Sauce is what dreams are made of. My secret ingredient for homemade barbecue sauce is a touch of smoked paprika. It adds just enough of that earthy, smoky flavor without overwhelming the sweetness of the sauce.

Here’s a few ideas on ways to use this BBQ sauce:

  • Baste it on some pork ribs during the last thirty minutes on the smoker
  • Serve it as a dip for french fries or onion rings
  • Toss it with leftover chicken and make Southern-fusion tacos
  • Add some smoky flavor to your regular pulled pork recipe
  • Make a Tex-Mex inspired Tamale Pie

This sauce will keep in your fridge for about two weeks, but feel free to make a larger batch and freeze it in mason jars for convenient homemade deliciousness throughout the year. I also use the half pint jars as drinking glasses when we have people over during the summer. They are so easy to store when not in use!
