Barbecue Maintenance & Home Safety
Over 70% of Australian homes have a barbecue, and half a million new ones are sold each year 1. They’re looking pretty sharp, too; those old grease-caked, cobweb-covered wood barbecues of yesteryear have given way to modern gas models – the centrepiece of many a backyard get-together. The sizzle of steaks, smell of sausage and taste of fried onions are part of every Aussie summer – and impossible to resist.
Keeping safe around your home barbecue isn’t difficult if you follow a few simple precautions.Complacency is your enemy, however – each year in this country, unsafe gas barbecues (and their connections) are responsible for injuries, fires and property damage that might easily have been avoided. Any kind of gas equipment or appliance around your home has the potential to be dangerous if not used and maintained correctly, so here are some tips to maintain your barbecue and stay safe.
Firstly, What Is LPG? The fuel used in most Australian barbecues is LPG, which stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (or Liquid Petroleum Gas). A few people call it all sorts of other things too, which can be confusing. Alternative names for LPG include LPG gas, LP gas, barbecue gas, bottled gas, camping gas and propane (this is the American preference). But Down Under, we mostly refer to it as LPG. See more here.
Less expensive in most cases, the electricity required for electric outdoor grills will cost much less than the charcoal or propane for a dinner of equal size.
How To Tell How Full (or Empty) Your Propane Tank Really Is
Nearly everyone has the typical 20-pound (5-gallon) barbeque grill propane tank, and many preppers have stocked up with extra tanks for various reasons – but how do you accurately know how empty or full your tank really is? Here’s the best way to find out how much propane is left in your tank:
WEIGH THE TANK.
Here’s the thing… all propane tanks have 2 weights stamped onto the top handle (the collar). An empty weight and a full weight (full with water).TW (T.W. Tare Weight)
This is the weight of the tank itself when empty.WC (W.C. Water Capacity)
This is the weight of the water required to fill the tank (yes, water). The typical 20-pound (5-gallon) barbeque grill tank would hold 47.6 pounds of water. Regulations limit the propane level to not exceed 42% of the water capacity of the tank.Long story short – the safe maximum weight of propane in a typical barbeque grill tank is 20 pounds (42% of 47.6 = 20 pounds). So, what do we do with this information to tell how empty or full your propane tank is? Simply weigh your propane tank and subtract it’s tare weight. Read more here.
Outdoor grills have been around for a long time, and over the years we have become more informed about how to grill safely and avoid bacteria.
BBQ Grill Safety: Tips for Gas and Charcoal Barbecue Grills
Gas Barbecue Safety Tips:
The National Fire Protection Association reports that flammable gas or liquid is the first item ignited in half of outdoor grill fires at home.
- Whether you have a portable propane tank or a natural gas line, check the connections for leaks before using your gas grill. Put soapy water on all joints and connections. If tiny bubbles form, a leak needs to be fixed before you light it. While it may be as simple as tightening the joint, just be sure not to over tighten!
- Check for rusted burners. You’ll probably have to buy BBQ burner replacements frequently but you can find them in many hardware stores or buy them from your barbecue’s manufacturer.
- Clean venturi tubes regularly. These are the tubes that extend from the burner to the control valves. Spiders and small insects like to build nests in there, causing blockages making grills difficult to ignite. It can interfere with gas flow making the flame uneven and dangerous.
- Always light your gas barbecue with the lid open. If it doesn’t start, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes for the gas to disperse before attempting again. Read full article here.
