Located in San Diego County’s North County region, Escondido is 30 miles north of downtown San Diego and 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean. It is about 40 minutes from the border with Mexico and is surrounded by rocky hills. The city was incorporated in 1888 and has since grown to become one of the largest cities in the county. It is one of the oldest in the county and is considered to be one of the friendliest places to live in.
The city’s government is comprised of four branches. Its mayor is elected to staggered terms, and the City Council elects the presiding officer. The Mayor also appoints the Mobilehome Rent Review Board and Escondido Joint Powers Financing Authority. The city’s government is run by a mayor, appointed by the city council. The governing body is the Escondido Community Development Commission (EDC).
The city is home to several important institutions. The Stone Brewing Company, which relocated its headquarters and brewery to Escondido in 2006, is located in the city. The city is also home to Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps. In the 1850s, the population of Escondido was primarily Spanish. After statehood, however, the city was populated by non-Hispanic settlers. The 1880s are considered the ‘Southern California Land Boom’ and the town’s population grew dramatically.
